“Lovers”, late 18th century

Oil on canvas representing a young couple in their home overlooking a balcony.

The young woman returns from her walk in the gardens, proudly showing her husband her findings.
The flowers she holds represent the ephemerality of youth and passionate love, before the monotonous life of marriage catches up with them.

The woman looks at us while her husband looks at her with tenderness.

On the desk we notice two books, a ruler, a sheet and a compass. Is the husband an architect or a geometrician?

Could it be the geometry of their love?
