Important cameo on agate represents a young woman in the antique style. 19th century
The cameo is very finely carved in an agate. The details and quality of the sculpture indicate careful craftsmanship, probably inspired by figures such as Aphrodite (Venus) or the Nereids, symbolizing beauty and purity. It has an 18-carat yellow gold setting, horse’s head hallmark. The frame features a decoration of three-leaf clovers decorated with turquoise.
The term “cameo” comes from the Latin word “cammaeus”, itself derived from the Greek word “kamaia”, meaning “decorative object”. Cameos are carved gems, often in relief, which have been popular throughout the ages, notably in Antiquity, the Renaissance and the Victorian era.
They were used to depict mythological figures, historical scenes or portraits, and worn by the upper classes to show their status and refined taste. Cameos, like this one, continue to fascinate with their beauty and artistic finesse, in making them prized collector’s items.
