“Portrait of a woman” in pastel, signed and dated 1753, attributed to Giambattista Tiepolo, inscription on the back in Italian:
“Tiepolo, Giambattista, painter (Venice 1696-Madrid 1770). Strongly influenced by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, Sebastiano Ricci and the examples of Venetian painting of the XVI century, in particular by Paolo Veronese, he knew how to bring the art of the fresco to the artistic level that represents the summit of the Italian tradition. Tiepolo’s impressive and extensive production includes frescoes, canvases, sketches, engravings and a whole exaltation of his time, which he was able to interpret with precision and taste. Among the most important frescoes are: in Venice “Gloria di San Dominico” (1739; Chiesa dei Gesuati), cycle “Stories of Antonio and Cleopatra”, Palazzo Labia (1747-50); in Bergamo, frescoes in the chapel Colleoni (1732); Stories of Barbarossa and Apollo and parts of the world (1751-53; Wursburg, Palace rezidentiel); Glories of the house Pisani (1761; villa Pisani in Stra); Enea led by Venus into the temple of the immortal, “Allegory of Spain”, “Apology of the Spanish Monarchy” (1762-66; Royal Palace, Madrid).
